DescriptionLarge trees line a dirt street. Frame houses and fences are visible behind the trees on either side of the road. The two-story house in the center has a broad front porch with vines growing on it.

InscribedOn verso, upper left, in black ink, "539"; in black ink, "Five American Lime or Basswood trees / located in the Village of Wethersfield in front / of the residence formerly of the Hon. silas Dean [sic] / who was a member of the continental congress in 1774 and / was sent to France as a political financial agent in 1776. / This was his home prior to these dates and the probabilities are / that the trees antedate them. They are the best specimen trees of their / kind in this locality. / Aug 8 1886 Fed. S. Brown"; lower right, in pencil, accession number.NotesSubject Note: The house with the porch is the Silas Deane house. The porch was added in the nineteenth century and has since been removed.
