InscribedOn verso, upper left, in black ink, "539"; in pencil and black ink, "A Button Ball tree located on the bank of the Connecticut Rier between State and Ferry Streets, which is at this time (1890) probably one of the oldest trees in Hartford. I have known the tree for over sixty years. In passing it one day ten or more years ago, a wood chopper had just cut off a large branch. In reply to my question, he said he was cutting the tree down by permission of the Valley Rail Road Co. I immediately called on them and represented the extreme old age of the tree, and they sent out and countermanded the permission they had given."; in pencil, "#261"; lower right, in pencil, accession number
