After graduating from high school, he studied law in New York City. In 1858 he went to Kansas, where he opened a law office. In 1860, he went to Colorado. He was appointed secretary of Colorado by President Lincoln and served as acting governor of the state. He returned East in 1863 and joined the army, serving as Captain with the 7th Regiment of U.S. Colored Troops and later as Major of the 41st Colored Infantry. In 1864, Weld was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. He died January 10, 1865 of complications from a cold caused by exposure in the trenches . His body was returned to Hartford for burial.
