NotesSubject Note: Penwipers made of cloth or paper were used for wiping ink off old-fashioned pens. Making ornamental penwipers was a popular pastime during the Victorian period. Ladies' magazines frequently included patterns and the Kellogg lithographic firm of Hartford published several designs featuring famous figures from the American past. These would have been cut out and folded by the purchasers. (Finlay 7/22/2010)
