Subject Note: Stephen Williams was born in Deerfield, Massachusetts on 14 May 1693. In 1704, when he was eleven years old, he was taken captive by Indians together with his parents and siblings. After fourteen months in Canada, he was freed and returned to Boston. The diary that he kept while a captive was published as an appendix to his father's famous narrative, The Redeemed Captive Returning to Zion. Stephen Williams attended Harvard College and was pastor in Longmeadow, Massachusetts for sixty-six years. He served as chaplain during the French and Indian Wars and was with Sir William Pepperell at Cape Breton and with Sir William Johnson at Lake George. He died in Longmeadow on 10 June 1782.
