He served for many years as pastor of the Congregational Church in Litchfield and later was director of the Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. He died in Brooklyn, New York at the home of his son, Henry Ward Beecher. His other children included Catherine Beecher, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Isabella Beecher Hooker.
