DescriptionAn elderly man wearing a coat, vest, a shirt with lace cuffs and a lace stock, breeches, hose, and shoes with buckles stands in an interior facing left. His right hand is outstretched. He holds a sword in his left hand. A table in the Empire style is in the left background. The legs are carved with fasces topped with eagles. A tablecloth, an inkwell, several books, and two scrolls of paper are on the table. Several large books are beneath the table. An ornately caraved chair is in the right background. In the upper part of the composition, drapery is attached to two pairs of Doric columns by cords with tassels. A patterned carpet is on the floor.
