DescriptionWhite cotton stocking; the foot and ankle are fine hand-knit lace in a scalloped pattern ("feather and fan"), attached to a plain, machine-knit stocking leg. There is a knitting error on "a" near the center front next to the machine-knit top. The knitting is very fine, 25 stitches to the inch. It has a shaped common heel. Two thin purple stripes (now faded mostly to brown) surround the top edge of the leg, which forms a casing, perhaps for a garter. The upper portion of the stocking has a center back seam.
The family history states that this stocking belonged to Sarah Hubbard of Glastonbury around 1800. However, the machine-knit cotton leg indicates a date no earlier than about the second quarter of the nineteenth century.
