BiographyJohn Henry Burnham was born 30 November 1836, the son of Sarah Brook Burnham and Joseph Burnham. He married Helena Estelle Ferre on 20 December 1866.

John Henry Burnham was commissioned Adjutant of the 16th Regiment of the Connecticut Volunteers on 30 July 1862. He served at the Battle of Antietam on 17 September 1862 and at the Battle of Fredericksburg on 13 December 1862. Burnham was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 13 December, and he was immediately placed in command of his regiment. Lieutenant Colonel Burnham was captured three times during the Civil War: on 20 April 1864; on 10 June 1864; and (after being exchanged on 3 August) on 9 September 1864. After his on 17 October 1864, he was stationed at Newbern and Kinston, North Carolina, until the close of the war. Lieutenant Colonel Burnham was breveted Brigadier General on 13 March 1865. He mustered out on 24 June 1865 and died in Middletown, Connecticut, on 10 April 1883.
