Seth Thomas Clock Co.

American, founded 1853
BiographySeth Thomas was born in Wolcott, Connecticut, on 18 August 1785, the son of Martha and James Thomas. He learned his trade as a joiner and carpenter, working with Eli Terry in 1808 on an order of clocks, and later working on wood movements with Silas Hoadley. The firm Terry, Thomas & Hoadley emerged, but Seth Thomas sold his share in 1813 and moved to Plymouth Hollow, Connecticut, to work under his own name. On 31 March 1853, Thomas formed the Seth Thomas Clock Company. He was succeeded in the firm by his son, Seth Jr. (1816-1888); he by son, Seth E. (1841-1910); and he by his son, Seth E., Jr. (1876-1932). The name of Plymouth Hollow was changed to Thomaston in 1866 in honor of Seth Thomas. He died 29 January 1859.
