DescriptionCube-shaped, pressed white glass biscuit jar with a silver-plated lid, with features and decoration influenced by the Aesthetic or Japanese styles of the late nineteenth century. The biscuit jar (.a) is made of a translucent white glass with a matte finish. The glass body of the jar has rounded edges and raised scrolled decoration at the top edges, lower side edges, and along the bottom edge of the sides. The center lower edge of each side has a raised oval cartouche, also surrounded by raised scrolled decoration. Each side, between the raised decoration, has different, fine, hand-painted floral decorations consisting of delicate blue and purple flowers on green stems. The glass portion of the jar has a wide circular opening in the top, which is fitted with an ornate silver-plated rim. The rim is surrounded by a beaded edge, and medallions anchor the rim to each corner of the jar. The rim is also fitted with a square handle that is outlined with a beaded edge. The center of the handle has raised beads inside a rectangular border with elaborately scrolled ends. A round lid (.b) with a low, domed top fits into the rim. The lid has a mushroom-shaped finial in the center, surrounded by raised decoration of scrolls and flowers. This is surrounded by a relatively plain area. The edge of the lid has a border of very small, raised semi-circles. The edges of the biscuit jar where the handle rubs against the corner have several short, black marks. The silver-plate has tarnished slightly.
