DescriptionCylindrical, grey, stoneware jar or crock with a flat wooden lid. The jar/crock (.a) has a plain edge, reeded rim, cylindrical body, and flat bottom. Two pulled lug handles are attached to the jar/crock about two inches below the rim; the handles are pressed against the jar/crock along their full length. Just below the handles, an incised line circles the jar/crock. To one side, between the handles and above the incised line, is an impressed mark, "S RISLEY/ NORWICH/ 4". The interior of the jar/crock is coated with a brown slip glaze, or Albany-type glaze. Some of this glaze is also found on the exterior of the jar/crock, near the reeded rim. The jar/crock is accompanied by a disc-shaped wooden lid (.b) that is flat on the bottom and has a beveled top edge. There are six short iron nails running through the top of the lid. A small, turned finial is located in the center of the lid.

A growing crack is located in the rim and side of the jar/crock at the mark. The crack begins at the rim, travels straight down, then to the right to the bottom of the jar/crock. At the time of cataloging, the crack did not cross the bottom of the jar/crock. Chips in the surface of the jar/crock are located to the right of the mark, and below the handle to the right of the mark. There are two additional chips on the inside of the jar/crock.
