DescriptionFour gallon, wide-mouthed stoneware jar or crock with a salt glaze on the exterior and a brown slip glaze, or Albany-type glaze, on the interior. The jar/crock has a flat bottom and cylindrical sides that rise to a flat, rolled rim. About two inches below the rim, an incised line circles the jar/crock. Two pulled lug handles are pressed against the jar/crock along their full length, attaching completely to opposite sides of the jar/crock. On one side, between the handles and above the line, is the faintly-impressed mark, "SEYMOUR & BOSWORTH/ HARTFORD.CONN". Below the mark and the incised line is the impressed number "4". The mark is highlighted with cobalt blue, the same material which is used to form an abstract design below the mark. The design consists of two circular forms, perhaps fruit, on opposite sides of a stem. Cobalt blue dots complete the design to the upper left, all the way to the rim. The thickest portions of the cobalt blue, near the lower left of the design, bubbled up slightly during manufacture.
There is one chip on the handle to the left of the mark, and one chip in the rim. The inside of the jar/crock is very dirty and is coated with an unknown, powdery white substance. Some of this white substance has adhered to the outside of the crock. Additionally, the majority of the salt glaze on the exterior of the jar is problematic. Most of the salt glaze on the exterior of the jar/crock is discolored and rough.
