DescriptionBlown and cut colorless lead glass decanter with a stopper. The decanter (.a) has a flared lip, a short cylindrical neck, low sloping shoulders, a barrel-shaped body, and a polished pontil mark on the bottom. There is an applied ring at the base of the neck. The decanter has three areas of cut decoration, beginning at the top with wide flutes cut into the sloping shoulders. Below this is a tall band of elaborately cut decoration. This band contains a repeating pattern of concentric ovals; the center of each oval contains a horizontally-oriented diamond containing a field of diamonds inside. Below this second band is a third band of narrow, cut flutes. The interior of the neck of the decanter was ground to receive a stopper.

The stopper (.b) is pressed and cut colorless lead glass. It consists of a mushroom-shaped finial above a ground tapered portion that fits into the neck of the decanter. The finial was cut on the top with a pattern of rays, radiating outward from a peak in the center.

There are many small chips over the cut edges of the decoration on the decanter and the stopper. There is one chip in the edge of the mushroom-shaped finial on the stopper.

Pontil mark: A rough place on a blown glass object where the solid metal rod, or pontil, is cracked off the object after final shaping and decoration. Pontil marks can be polished to achieve a smooth surface.
