DescriptionMold-blown and cut colorless non-lead glass case bottle and stopper with a flared rim, a short cylindrical neck, curved shoulders, a square body, and a flat bottom with a polished pontil mark. There is a ridge of glass surrounding the neck, formed by a second gather of glass added to the body of the case bottle using a technique known as the half-post method. A border of chains, flowers, and bows decorates the shoulders of the case bottle. The sides and edges of the case bottle have been cut to create flat, polished surfaces and canted corners and edges. The interior of the neck has been ground to receive a stopper. The stopper, firmly wedged into the neck of the case bottle, has a spherical finial over a tapered cylindrical portion that fits into the neck. Much of the gilding has worn off of the shoulders of the bottle. There are a few scratches in the polished glass on the bottom of the case bottle.
Pontil mark: A rough place on a blown glass object where the solid metal rod, or pontil, is cracked off the object after final shaping and decoration. Pontil marks can be polished to achieve a smooth surface.
