DescriptionMold-blown and cut colorless non-lead glass case bottle with a flared rim, a short cylindrical neck, wide curved shoulders, a square body, and a flat bottom with a polished pontil mark. There is a ridge of glass surrounding the neck, formed by a second gather of glass added to the body of the case bottle using a technique known as the half-post method. Gilding was added in wide bands at the rim and exterior of the neck. An elaborate square border of floral and leaf gilding, with medallions at the corners, decorates the shoulders. The sides and edges of the case bottle have been cut to create flat, polished surfaces and canted corners and edges. The interior of the neck was ground to receive a stopper (now missing). Portions of the gilding have worn off. There is a ring of light scratches and wear on the bottom of the case bottle.

Pontil mark: A rough place on a blown glass object where the solid metal rod, or pontil, is cracked off the object after final shaping and decoration. Pontil marks can be polished to achieve a smooth surface.
NotesObject Note: This case bottle was intended for use while traveling with a matching group of bottles housed in a case. (Hunt 3/23/2005)
