DescriptionThree gallon, wide-mouthed stoneware jar or crock with a salt glaze on the exterior and a brown slip glaze, or Albany type glaze, on the interior. The jar/crock has a flat bottom and cylindrical sides that end in a flat, rolled rim. Two delicate, pulled, lug or crescent handles are located on opposite sides of the jar/crock. On one side, between the handles, is a maker's mark, "S L PEWTRESS&CO/ NEW HAVEN CONN/ 3". The mark has been lightly hand-painted with cobalt blue, and there is a larger cobalt blue design below this. It consists of a flower formed by two large spirals, two additional petals, a stem, and several large blue dots. The glaze and cobalt blue have been thickly applied to the jar/crock, resulting in a highly textured, light brown or yellow surface. There is crazing over all the exterior glazed surfaces, and three hairline cracks beneath the handle to the left of the mark. That same handle has a crack to one side.
