DescriptionDiamond-shaped, scalloped-edged lidded dish of Chinese export porcelain, hand-painted in underglaze cobalt blue with a Chinese landscape; the lidded dish is a type of Chinese export porcelain known as Nankingware. The landscape shows a river with Chinese structures on either bank, with trees in the foreground and mountains in the distance. There are boats on the river with small figures inside.

Dish (.a:): The landscape, found on the bottom of the inside of the dish, is surrounded by a series of borders. The first is a blue border consisting of a band of blue with darker lines creating a diamond, or lattice, pattern inside. At three points, this border is interrupted by an area of white containing a wavy line and various figures and geometric patterns (perhaps inspired by the Eight Taoist Immortals and their symbols). This is followed by a field of white. At the rim of the dish are two more borders, the first being the "Nanking" border, which is a pattern of short lines alternating between a thin line with a dot at either end and a thin line with an arrowhead at one end. The second border, at the edge of the rim, is a series of scrolls, leaves, and flowers. The outside of the dish has four clusters of flowers.

Lid (.b): The landscape, found on the top of the lid, is surrounded by two borders. The first is a blue line, then a blue border consisting of a band of blue with darker lines creating a diamond, or lattice, pattern inside. At three points, this border is interrupted by an area of white containing a wavy line and various figures and geometric patterns (perhaps inspired by the Eight Taoist Immortals and their symbols). A small molded finial has been applied to the top of the lid. The inside of the lid has yellowed near the edges.
