DescriptionOval, Chinese export porcelain platter with hand-painted underglaze cobalt blue decoration showing a Chinese landscape; the platter is a type of Chinese export porcelain known as Nankingware. The landscape consists of a tree and Chinese structure to the right. A river flows through the landscape, with a bridge in the foreground and hills, trees, and houses in the distance. There are two figures in the scene, one on the bridge and another on a boat that floats on the river. The landscape is surrounded by a series of borders. The first is a thin blue line, followed by a field of white. This is surrounded by a blue border consisting of a band of blue with darker lines creating a diamond pattern inside. At three points, this border is interrupted by an area of white containing a wavy line and various figures and geometric patterns (perhaps inspired by the Eight Taoist Immortals and their symbols). Next is a field of white, then the "Nanking" border, which is a pattern of short lines alternating between a thin line with a dot at either end and a thin line with an arrowhead at one end. Finally, at the edge of the rim, is a band of blue with darker lines creating a diamond pattern inside.
