DescriptionCopper lusterware mug with hand-painted floral decorations on a field of deep orange. After the mug was formed by a mechanical molding process, the handle was molded and applied to the body of the mug. The decoration was added to the outside of the mug by applying gold luster over a deep orange slip, creating the look of copper. Gold luster was applied in a band at the rim, foot, and base of the mug. A band of the deep orange slip, overpainted with the floral decorations in gold luster, was left visible in the middle of the mug. There is some crazing on the inside of the mug.
NotesObject Note: By painting the gold luster over an orange slip, the manufacturer created a light copper tone, almost a gold luster. (Hunt 7/30/2004)
