DescriptionRectangular, buff-colored earthenware sauce tureen with a blue-tinted glaze, a type of ceramic known as pearlware. The sauce tureen (.a) has an underglaze cobalt blue transfer-printed pattern known as "Grazing Rabbits." The pattern, found on each side of the outside of the tureen and the top of the lid, shows three rabbits grazing beneath a tree in a rural landscape. There are additional large flowers beneath the tree, and a farm in the left distance. A variation of this pattern is printed on the inside of the tureen, showing a smaller landscape with only one rabbit beneath the tree. A border, found at the foot of the tureen, on the inside rim of the tureen, and on the rim of the lid (.b), consists of small flowers on a blue field. Two handles, each in the shape of a lion's head, have been molded and applied to the sauce tureen. A finial, also in the shape of a lion's head, has also been applied to the lid. Additionally, the lid has a small semi-circular opening to allow a spoon to rest in the tureen. A crack begins on the lid at this opening and extends toward the finial. There is some crazing over all the surfaces of the tureen and lid.
