DescriptionPieced quilt consisting of worsted wool top, batting, and a plain-woven wool backing. The top consists of large square, rectangular, and triangular pieces of glazed and unglazed calamanco in red, salmon, bronw, and yellow. The three layers have been hand-stitched together in a quilted pattern. The quiltmaker's name, "Lucy Arnold" and the date "1815" are hand-stitched on the back of the quilt. The worsted that forms the top is a variety of glazed and unglazed calamancos including satin-woven striped, plain-woven domestically produced, and twill-woven. One triangular piece of the top is a printed twill-woven wool. The center of the quilt has two large square pieces of red calamanco; this is flanked by three columns of alternating triangular pieces. The quilted pattern is varied and consists of intersecting circles and curved lines, flowers on abstract vines, and double lines that follow the shape of the pieces that form the top of the quilt. The quilting thread is in different colors to match the color of the wool block. The quilt is nearly square overall, with shaped openings cut out at each bottom corner to accommodate the bed posts. The majority of the quilt has a knife edge, but the bed post cut-outs are edged with woven green tape and small ties. The backing consists of plain-woven undyed linen.

Condition: Many areas of the top have worn through, revealing the batting and backing. Some panels of brown calamanco, especially toward the bottom, have been lined on the top with crepeline. The backing has both light and heavy stains. A linen casing has been stitched to the back of the top edge, to allow the quilt to hang.
