DescriptionOn recto: An elderly African-American man is seated on a grassy bank. He is barefoot and wears a checked shirt and trousers, apparently blue jeans. A young white girl sits on a rock beside him. She wears a dress with a wide neckline and pantalettes. Her shoes are laced around her ankles. With her left hand, she points to a passage in an open book, probably a Bible. With her right hand, she points towards the sky. Trees are in the right background. A woman and children stand near a small frame cabin in the left background.

On verso: Half-length portrait of an elderly man seated at a table. He wears a coat, vest, and lace stock and cuffs. His hair is tied in a queue. One hand rests on a stack of papers. Drapery with cords and tassel and the base of a column are in the background.
NotesTechnique Note: The presence of two separate images on the recto and verso of this sheet suggests that the prints may be proof impressions. It is unlikely that a print such as this would have been offered for sale. (Finlay 1/27/2004)
