NotesSubject Note: The Festa di San Donato is organized annually the first weekend in August by the Pontelandolfo Community Club in Waterbury, Connecticut. Founded in 1965 by Italian immigrants from Pontelandolfo near Naples, the Club began as a combination of two community social societies that had formed in the 1930s. The Club owns a 35-acre site in North Waterbury that is home to sports fields, a restaurant and banquet hall, a small chapel, and the festival buildings and grounds. One of the Club’s signature activities, the Festa celebrates San Donato, the patron saint of Pontelandolfo. Members of the Ponte men’s and women’s societies attend a special mass at St. Lucy’s Church, 24 Branch St, Waterbury (merged into All Saints Parish in 2017 and no longer active) then process to the Club – a distance of two miles – carrying the statue of San Donato. The statue is placed in the chapel on the festival grounds, and there visitors can enter to pray and venerate the saint and place money on his clothes. The Festa is also a social gathering that includes Italian music performers, activities such as a parmesan cheese contest, and popular foods for sale. Like many ethnic community festivals, the Festa is a major fundraiser for the Club’s scholarships and activities.
