DescriptionWoman's winter bonnet of olive brown silk with quilting on both the brim and the crown. The brim, 5 1/2 inches wide at the center top, is quilted in parallel rows 1/2 inch apart. The brim ends at the side in a deep point, several inches lower than the crown at the back of the neck. The brim is stiffened at the edge with wire; the wire continues around each point and up around the back of the neck. The brim is also supported by a reed threaded through a narrow casing halfway across the brim's width, parallel to the quilting. The crown is quilted with parallel rows about 7/8 inch apart, running vertically on the back of the bonnet. The crown is gathered and stitched to the brim with a piped seam. A binding of brown or black silk covers the base of the crown. The curtain is finely gathered across the top and attached to the base of the crown and lower edges of the brim, continuing to the front points. All the pieces are interlined with cotton batting; the curtain is not quilted, however, as the other pieces are. The brim is lined with an olive brown silk satin in which some of the quilting stitches can be seen. The crown is lined with a woven cotton plaid of blue and white. The separated tie is a brown silk ribbon, 2 3/8 inches wide, with decorative edges. The 16 1/2-inch-long piece has stripes of satin weave as well as damask designs of flowers. The folds at the end once attached to the bonnet are still present.
