DescriptionWoman's winter bonnet of plum-colored silk, wadded with cotton. The brim, 6 1/2 inches wide at the center top, is edged with two rows of one-inch-wide, gathered and padded fabric, with the outermost edge supported by an internal wire. Behind the two rows of gathering, another wire is encased. Several closely worked rows of quilting parallel this wire, while the rest of the brim is quilted in diagonal lines, spaced about 1 3/8 inches apart. The crown is box-pleated into the brim seam. The angle between the crown and brim is flat. A curtain (or "bavolet"), also pleated, is stitched to the bottom of the crown and all the way to the pointed ends of the brim. The brim is lined with a black-colored silk, stitched over the brown glazed cotton lining and interlining of cotton batting. The seam inside the brim edge is covered with narrow black tape. The curtain is also interlined with cotton and lined with black silk. A strip of fabric, perhaps once plum-colored, is used to bind the bottom edge of the bonnet, under the curtain. The black ribbon ties, 3 5/8 inches wide, extend approximately 22 inches from the brim's bottom corners.
