DescriptionA barefoot boy stands beside a large square stone well, drinking from a wooden bucket bound with metal hoops and attached with a rope to a pulley. He wears a vest, a shirt with rolled-up sleeves, a bow tie, and trousers. A straw hat and jacket are on the ground in the right foreground. Two spotted dogs are beside him. A long pole, possibly a fishing pole, leans against the rim of a second stone basin in the left foreground. Weeds and plants, possibly including hollyhocks, grow in the foreground, and a large tree shades the well. In the background, a path leads through a grassy lawn to a house with a picket fence and a dormer window. A man and a woman stand on the porch. Vines grow on the roof. Smoke issues from the chimney. A lake with a boat sailing on it is in the distance, surrounded by hills.
NotesSource Note: A painting by Frederick Styles Agate (1803-1844) served as the source for this composition. (Shortell 2/10/2003)

Subject Note: This print was probably meant to illustrate the popular song "The Old Oaken Bucket," written by Samuel Woodward in 1818. (Finlay 12/16/2002)
