DescriptionA house with a two-story porch between convex bays is beside a Second Empire style office building with a mansard roof and dormers. The second-story porch of the house has iron railings and a pagoda roof with a finial. A round or octagonal cupola is on the flat roof. Windows have louvered shutters. The double ogee arch over the door appears to have been inspired by Islamic architecture. The decoration along the roofline appears to be derived from classical Greek acroteria. A sign above the door reads: "REPUBLICAN CLUB." The building at the right appears to be faced with brownstone. A sign above the door reads: "AETNA INS. CO." An alley is immediately to the left of the house. Other buildings, apparently commercial buildings, are at the left and right. Men, women, and girls, blurred from movement, walk on the paved sidewalk. Two small boys are at the left. Two bicycles lean on the curb nearby. A fire hydrant is to the right. The pavement appears to be wet, probably from recent rain.
NotesSubject Note: According to the Hartford City Directory, the Republican Club was located at 676 Main Street in 1902. The Aetna (Fire) Insurance Co. was located at 666 Main Street. (Finlay 12/30/2003)
