DescriptionThree men in front of W. I. Sparks dry goods store in Norfolk; northeast corner of the green. Cat on porch at right of man in center. Two-story clapboard Greek Revival with louvered shutters and full front first and second floor porches. Sign on upper railing over door "W. I. Sparks" and one on right "R. S_?__ Undertaker". First floor has double entry door flanked by twin bay shop windows displaying ceramic containers. Right bay window sign; "Dry Goods". Left side of building has 1 story porch and small ell with shop window and sign "Boots & S[hoes?]" Second story porch has banister railing, lattice panel on left, fan shaped trellis, two small tables-one with plants, a hanging plant and exterior stairs going down right side of building. Rectangular gable window appears to have leaded glass. Right rear roof eave near a door has boxed pulley with hook on rope. Left of building is picket fence and tall post. Left front of building is stone loading dock. Street lamp at right of building.
NotesConstituent Note: Some photographs in this collection bear the imprint of the Northern Survey Company.

Subject Note: Known as the "Old Store" beginning in 1843 as the Battell Store. W. I. Sparks was one in a series of owners and operated as a general store from 1879 to 1886. In 1885, the original building is said to have deteriorated and collapsed.
