DescriptionFour men in work clothes use shovels and crowbars to move a concrete curbstone. All wear caps. A fifth man wearing an apron stands in the background. Shovels and lumber lie in the street. A utility pole is at the right. Brick commercial buildings are in the background. The nearest has what appears to be a cast iron storefront, including a pediment on columns. Signs read: "222 Tulin, Toft [& Tulin 224]""Wholesale Grocers - Flour Dea[lers]" "Domestic / and / Imported / Oils" A striped awning is at the window. A sign on the building at the far left reads: "Agricultural Supplies / Farm Machinery."
NotesSubject Note: Part of a series of photographs taken during the construction of the Bulkeley Bridge. Shaia D. Tulin, Lazarus Toft and Samuel S. Tulin were the partners in Tulin, Toft & Tulin. According to Hartford Jews, a book by Rabbi Morris Silverman, published in 1970, Shaia D. Tulin was born in Homsk, Poland in 1848. He came to the U.S. in 1886 and settled in Colchester where he farmed for ten years. From 1896 to 1916 he was president of Tulin, Toft & Tulin, wholesale grocers. He died in 1938.
