DescriptionSmall group of men, most of whom appear to be African American, are digging up the street. Most wear hats and carry pickaxes. In the background are commercial buildings on the west side of Main Street. A fire hydrant is on the sidewalk at the left. The building behind it contains the furniture business of Linus T. Fenn. At the next corner, on the opposite side of Mulberry Street has signs that read: "Coleman & Kennelly / Druggists" and "Robbins & Winship." The large white building to the right of center is the City Hotel. Utility poles and wires line the street.
NotesSubject Note: Linus T. Fenn's furniture business was at 203 and 205 Main Street. The City Hotel was at 217 Main Street. William H. Coleman and James A. Kennelly, Jr., druggists, were located at 207 Main Street.
