DescriptionViews of Main Street, Hartford include many commercial buildings and businesses. Many photographs include crowds of pedestrians on the sidewalks and crossing the streets at crosswalks. Many include automobile traffic, trucks, buses, and trolleys. Photographs were taken at the corners of State Street, Linden Place, Mulberry Street, and Trumbull Street. Businesses include the Aetna Insurance Company, the Connecticut River Banking Company the Empire Garage, Frayer & Foster, G. Fox & Company, the Hartford Stamp Works, Dwight R. Judson & Company, Liggetts Drug Store, the Lindy Dress Shop, the New Palace Theater, the Phoenix National Bank, the United Cigar Company, Whalens, and Wise Smith & Company. Some photographs include billboards, water tanks, and what appears to be a radio transmitter tower. One photograph features what appears to be a motorcade with men in open cars accompanied by policemen on motorcycles. Sandwich boards appear in one picture. A bridge spanning a narrow street connecting two buildings has a clock in it.
NotesDate Note: Although all of the photographs were probably taken by Meyers Studio during the 1930s and 1940s, the individual prints were made by Meyers Studio at different points in time, probably ranging from the 1930s to the late 1990s or early 2000s. (Finlay 6/3/2014)
