DescriptionMan's breeches of brown cotton velveteen. The broad fall extends entirely across the front of the breeches and buttons at each hip and across the top. Behind the fall are two pockets. The front of the breeches behind the fall is made with butternut brown wool (domestically produced). The waistband is 4 1/2 inches wide at center front and fastens with three brass shank buttons (3/4-inch diameter). The front of the breeches is smooth. The back, which is pieced, is pleated into the waistband. The center back waistband and seam are inserted with a gusset of velveteen. Eyelets worked into the waistband could be laced for an adjustable fit. The legs are splayed. The side seams of the legs are open for about eight inches and are fastened with five brass shank buttons (5/8-inch diameter). The knee band is 1 1/4 inches wide. The buttonhole side of the leg openings is lined with butternut-colored wool. The fall, waistband, pocket bags, kneebands, and button sides of the leg openings are lined with plain-woven, coarse linen.
