DescriptionHand-stitched buff leather breeches with a broad fall. The breeches are cut to be tight across the front, but with a full seat that is gathered into the waistband at the back. The legs are open for seven inches up the sides, closing with four leather-covered shank buttons, and ending at the knee with a pointed strap extension opposite a buttonhole flap. The back of the knee is cut higher than the front. The center back of the waistband has a diamond-shaped insertion; there are holes on either side of this insertion for a lacing to control the fit of the waistband. Underneath the fall on either hip is a pocket, the waistband buttons with two leather-covered buttons at center front under the fall. The top of the fall has decorative stitching in a diamond motif; it buttons at each hip with a pewter shank button. The breeches are unlined. The stitching is very fine--about twelve to thirteen stitches per inch.

Said to have been worn by Thomas Miner of Groton when he was killed at Connecticut's bloodiest Revolutionary War battle, which took place at Fort Griswold, New London, on 6 September 1781.
