DescriptionIdentified subjects include a view of the wreck of the Metis, Eastern Point, Groton, and a view of Charles Island, off Milford, Connecticut. Steamboats at a dock include the River Queen. Sailing vessels appear in some photographs.
Part of the John S. Craig Collection.
NotesSubject Note: The steamer Metis was wrecked off Watch Hill, Rhode Island on August 30, 1872. Photographers from nearby Connecticut, such as M. Safford & Co. of Norwich, rushed to the scene to take photographs to sell to customers eager for pictures of the disaster.
