DescriptionMap of Georgia and Alabama and the northern portion of Florida. The boundary lines are marked with broken solid lines and pink watercolor. There are several solid black lines that have been colored red or green. None of the places on the map are labeled; instead, there are numbers and letters, some marked with circles, that correspond with information in the key, published separately from the map. Natural features include elevation, conveyed with hachure marks, rivers, and what appears to be swampland.
Label TextDuring the second quarter of the nineteenth century, the deep South lagged far behind the Northeast in both population and industrial development. Few railroads and only one canal appear on this 1841 map which was used for teaching geography to schoolchildren. Educational institutions are limited to the University of Georgia, Oglethorpe College, the University of Alabama, and LaGrange College. Southern Florida was so sparsely populated and so undeveloped that it wasn't even included on the map.
