DescriptionMap of Milford, Connecticut, from the "Hither Lots," "Fresh Meadow," "Sqabble Hill," and "Eseck Plain" to the north; the Indian or East River to the east; the Long Island Sound to the south; and the "Great Salt Meadows," "Pumpkin Delight," and Scoliokorat or Snake Pond to the west. Various natural features aside from those already named are labeled: "Dreadful Swamp," "Stubby Plain," and "Negros Lake," "Milford Island," and "Island Bar" (including the explanation, "Bare at half ebb." The "Line of Palisadoes" is inscribed in orange around the town center. Real estate lots are denoted with black squares and numbers or letters, which correspond to the list of occupants on the left and right sides of the map. Roman numerals are used to list "home lots of the first Planters." Quite a few features are included that contributed to Milford's history since its founding in 1639, including Trumbull Fort (1776) and various common fences. Three cemeteries are delineated: the "first grave yard," the burying ground and the "Indian Burying Place." At the bottom of the map, there are three vignettes, one a more distant view of the town, one showing the public buildings and the other a showing the town from West Point.
Label TextEdward R. Lambert was the author of a History of the Colony of New Haven, and his 1835 map of Milford reflects his antiquarian interests, incorporating a brief history of his hometown. Maps are often rather wordy documents, but Lambert's map is exceptional for the amount of historical information that it attempts to convey. In addition to the the brief history, notes on the map itself provide additional details about the development of specific parts of the town. Lambert's map is not only retrospective in its focus; it also provides important documentation for Lambert's own day, listing of the inhabitants in 1830, and including two small views that provide vivid glimpses of the public buildings at the center of town and a panorama looking up the river from West Point. These are among the earliest known views of Milford.
NotesCartographic Note: Scale: 6 inches equals 1 mile
