NotesSubject Note: Although an inscription on the back indicates that the sitter is John Davison Stephens, this is clearly an incorrect transcription of an older inscription giving the name as "DeForest Stephens." The date "c. 186?" in the later inscription is also incorrect; based on both the costume of the sitter and the medium of the photograph, it probably dates from the 1890s, not the 1860s.
