NotesSubject Note: Ambrose Burnside (1824-1881) graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1847. When the Civil War broke out, he became a colonel in the Rhode Island Volunteers. After fighting successfully at the Battle of Bull Run, he was promoted to Brigadier General of the Union Army. General Burnside replaced General George McClellan as commander of the Army of the Potomac after the battle at Antietem in September 1862.
