DescriptionHalf-length standing portrait of an elderly man in military uniform, including epaulets, gold buttons, a sash, and a belt with a vine and leaf design. His left hand grasps the hilt of his sword. He has sideburns. One button of his coat is unbuttoned.
NotesSubject Note: Winfield Scott (1786-1866) was appointed general in chief of the army in 1841. He gained lasting renown during the Mexican War. In 1852 he achieved the rank of Lieutenant General, the first to do so since George Washington. He remained in command at the start of the Civil War, retiring at the end of 1861.
