DescriptionMen and boys are seated in folding chairs in the interior of a room, listening to a speaker who is seated on a desk or table at the front of the room. Most boys wear sweaters and trousers; some wear jackets. Most men wear suits; some are elderly; some have mustaches. Electric light fixtures hang from the ceiling and an electric floor lamp is in a corner. A sign reads: "MESSAGES / OF MERIT / Indifference is a bad partner / to work with. / It drives away those good jobs / called Interest, Care, and Necessity."
NotesSubject Note: The Hillyer Institute was founded in 1893 to provide training for the young working men of Hartford. Originally part of the YMCA, it eventually became Hillyer College, a part of the University of Hartford. (Finlay 3/26/2011)
