DescriptionThree-quarter length double portrait of King Louis Philippe of France and Lafayette. The two men stand side by side. The king wears a military uniform jacket with epaulettes, braid, and a medal. His right hand rests on his chest. Lafayette is wearing a suit, shirt, and stock. He holds the king's left wrist in his right hand and extends his left hand towards a group of cheering men who are waving their hats in the air.

NotesHistorical Note: Louis Philippe (1773-1850) became King of France following the Revolution of 1830. His ascension was viewed as a victory by the Liberals, but he alienated the lower bourgeoisie by refusing to grant them the franchise, and he was deposed in the Revolution of 1848. (Finlay 8/7/2009)
