Subject Note: Amy Tatro (1906-2004) was a pioneering woman artist, who graduated from Yale in the 1930s and designed jewelry for G. Fox, posters and advertising for the Hartford Electric Light Company, and plastics for Colt Firearms. She was also active as a painter and art teacher, and traveled widely in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. She never married and spent many years caring for her ailing mother.
Most of the photos are of Amy Tatro and her parents, Alexander and Meta. Alexander Tatro was born in Canada in 1868 and immigrated to the United States in 1870. Meta Heinze was born in Sweden in 1871and moved to the United States in 1880. She came with her sister and they worked as maids for wealthy families around Hartford such as the Ponds. The Ponds House in Elizabeth Park is named after them. She married Alexander in 1900 and her daughter Amy was born in 1906. (1910 Federal Census, Hartford Courant: Sept. 12, 2004)On View
