DescriptionMan's derby hat of black felt. The rounded crown is encircled by a black grosgrain ribbon tied in a bow on the proper left side. The edge of the brim is curled inward and is bound with the grosgrain ribbon. The crown is lined with cream-colored satin, which is pleated around the top, which is stamped in gold and brown: "Dobbs / FIFTH AVENUE / NEW YORK." A brown leather sweatband around the edge of the crown is stamped in gold: "RK."

The original hat box is made of cardboard and is oval in shape. The inside has a cardboard insert into which to fit the hat. The outside of the box is covered with woodgrain-printed paper. The lid is edged in black and printed with "G. Fox & Co. / ESTABLISHED 1847 HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT" and "Man's Shops." Two black cotton ties fastened to the sides of the box tie together over the lid.
