Madame Varney, dressmaker, was born Jennie Sumner in Hartland, VT. She ran away and married Varney, first name unknown, while she was still young. She has two sons, Fred Varney and Will Varney. Before Jennie S. Varney arrived in Hartford in 1880 she was divorced from her husband. While in Hartford she worked as a dressmaker and lived for some time at 270 Main Street. In the summer of 1898 Madame Varney abruptly closed her shop and absconded to Denver, Colorado without paying her debts. At the time of her flight from Hartford she was believed to be about 60 years old.
