Albert Carlos Bates was born on 12 March 1865 in East Granby, Connecticut. He was the son of Carlos and Hannah Spencer (Powers) Stowell Bates. On 19 October 1912, he married Alice Morgan of Hartford, daughter of Jeremiah and Cynthia Morgan (Tucker) Crocker. He was the Librarian of the Connecticut Historical Society for 47 years from 1892-1940. He was the author of many books and pamphlets, including volumes 7 through 24 of the Connecticut Historical Society Collections. Albert Carlos Bates died at his home on Marshall Street, Hartford, on 27 March 1954. His death was preceded by his wife, Alice Morgan Bates, whom died 28 February 1953.
