Harry Howell Carney

Harry H. Carney (1910-1974), was an American musician featured soloist in Duke Ellington’s band and the first baritone saxophone soloist in jazz. Harry was taught the clarinet and saxophone from private teachers and played in local bands in Boston until Ellington hired him in 1927. Upon joining the band, Carney's main instrument was the baritone saxophone. In 1957, Carney was part of a band led by pianist Billy Taylor that recorded the album "Taylor Made Jazz". Carney was the longest serving player in Ellington's orchestra.
