Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. (1902-1985) represented Massachusetts in the United States Senate (1937-1944 and 1947-1953) and served as United States Ambassador to the United Nations (1953-1960) in the administration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. In 1960, he was the unsuccessful Republican nominee for Vice President. Lodge was a presidential contender in the 1964 primary campaign. Lodge later served as U.S. Ambassador to South Vietnam (1965-1967) and U.S. Ambassador to West Germany (1968-1969). He served as the Personal Representative of the President to the Holy See (1970-1977).
