William J. Cahill jr. was a lifelong resident of Meriden, Connecticut. He graduated from Meriden High School and Bentley School of Accounting. He served in World War II as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps in England. In 1951, he was elected Mayor of Meriden. In 1954, he was elected state senator from the 13th District, serving for one term. In 1956, he was an alternate delegate to the national Democratic convention. In 1959, he was the unsuccessful mayoral candiate in Meriden, losing to his brother-in-law, John Ivers. In 1962, he became director of the State Public Works Department's Building and Grounds Division. He died on 15 December 1971 in Meriden.
