The future Southern New England Telephone Company was established as the District Telephone Company of New Haven. The company was reorganized as the Southern New England Telephone Company (known as SNET) in 1882. The company had a virtual monopoly of telephone service in Connecticut for many years. In 1998, the Southern New England Telephone Company merged with SBC Communications, which in turn merged with A T & T Communications in 2006, at which point the Southern New England Telephone Company ceased to exist.
